A large crack in the section of the cliff overlooking the stream gushing molten lava gave Thursday scientific afternoon stood just a few yards away.

The lava was spouting a tube that was exposed when a delta of huge rocks, 26 acres of lava crashed into the ocean on the site the new year's Eve.
This collapse has triggered massive explosions and giant waves in the region. The USGS warned that a part of the unstable Cliff can still be attached and could interrupt at any time.
"This collapse yesterday does not diminish the risks," said Friday the geologist of the USGS Janet Babb. «As long as lava continued to flow into the ocean, this area is still very dangerous... There is always risk of collapse of the cliff there.»
When the lava hits fresh sea water, it reacts and explosions of causes that can throw the chunks of hot stones and debris lands, where tourists go hiking see lava, and towards the sea, where the shoreline cruise ships visit.

The gases released by the reaction are also dangerous to breathe, and fragments of volcanic glass can be lifted into the air when the hot lava meets the cold sea water.

The National Park Service has set up a viewing area designated away from traffic where visitors can admire lava safely. But some people cross the lines and venturing into areas closed, dangerous, officials said.
